As well as being a city, it is also a province.One that was cut out of the Castilian heart of the country following the post Franco settlement and constitution.
Its roots go back to the Moorish Iberian ascendancy in the 9th century. Its foundation as a capital had to wait till after the unification of the Christian Kingdoms and final reconquista of the Peninsular in the 15th.
Phillip II moved his court here in 1561 but it was to be some time before Madrid was able to establish itself as more than a political capital.
Today Madrid is the vibrant heart of the country,finally having pulled ahead of its Catalan rivals for size and importance.
The city has some of the best sporting facilities ( many recently constructed in anticipation of hosting the Olympics in 2012 and 2016)and educational institutions in Spain and the recently inaugurated high speed train ( AVE) service linking Madrid with Barcelona and Malaga means that groups can base themselves in Madrid and with a traveling time of 2 and half hours not miss out on what can be enjoyed in Andalusia and Catalonia.
